The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has proposed a new set of standard operating procedures (SOP) for its power distribution wing, covering a range of activities related to on-grid solar photovoltaic installations and electric vehicle charging. The draft SOP, published for feedback from KSEB staff, covers inspections, metering and billing procedures, maintenance and safety aspects, voltage imbalance issues, and detailed defect check-lists.
The document lays out procedures for dealing with problems affecting distribution transformers from the injection of solar power into the grid and the impact of electric vehicle charging, recommending that charging an electric vehicle during peak solar hours can help lower the terminal voltage and prevent inverter high-voltage tripping.
The proposed SOP also covers procedures for capital works, maintenance of the power supply network, and breakdown repairs, including the clearance of tree branches in proximity to overhead power lines twice a year.
The KSEB says the draft SOP will be reviewed periodically to ensure continued relevance and alignment with statutory regulations, policies, technological advances, and operational best practices. The board will now seek feedback from its staff on the proposed SOP before finalizing it, with the aim of implementing the new procedures to minimize supply interruptions and ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory frameworks.
