In 2015, Erin and Chris Amerman bought a 210‑acre farm outside Gainesville. A year later they founded Critter Creek Farm Sanctuary, beginning with three rescued cows.
In 2019 the couple sold their dream home and used the proceeds to purchase 200 acres in Alachua, creating Critter Hills. The combined 420 acres now shelter more than 180 cows, along with donkeys, pigs, a bison, a turkey and a water buffalo.
The sanctuary’s mission is to foster compassion for all animals through science‑based rescue, outreach and conservation. Its public tours and events aim to change attitudes toward farmed animals and encourage a meat‑free lifestyle.
One of the Amermans’ first rescue stories began with a rat named Templeton, which sparked their belief that society treats some species unfairly. The couple now uses their platform to advocate for all animals.
The sanctuary is preparing to host a national conference on bovine welfare next spring, while seeking state grants to maintain and grow its herd.
