Gavaskar Calls for Rule Changes to Restore Bowling Balance in T20 Cricket
Sunil Gavaskar has called for immediate rule revisions in T20 cricket to address what he describes as a severe imbalance between bat and ball, citing the ongoing IPL 2026 season as evidence of the growing crisis. The former India captain argued that fast bowlers are being unduly restricted by strict interpretations of the wide bouncer rule, shorter boundaries, and fielding limitations, calling the conditions equivalent to 'bowling with one hand tied behind their back.'
In a column for Sportstar, Gavaskar emphasized that short deliveries barely above head height are being called wides, removing a key weapon for pace bowlers. He proposed allowing a margin of one foot above the batter's head in stance as a fair adjustment to restore competitive balance. He also pointed to the increased power of modern bats and lack of corresponding protections for bowlers as compounding factors.
Gavaskar recalled his tenure as ICC Cricket Committee chairman when bouncers were reintroduced with a limit of one per batter per over, which he said ended the era of lower-order pinch-hitters and restored fairness. He questioned why bowlers face restrictions while batters remain free to attempt any shot.
The former opener directly appealed to Sourav Ganguly, current ICC Cricket Committee chairman, to prioritize bowlers' concerns in upcoming meetings. He urged the committee to consider rule tweaks that would give fast bowlers more leeway and revive the contest between bat and ball.
The ICC is expected to review playing conditions ahead of the next global T20 tournament, with Gavaskar's recommendations likely to feature in discussions.
