Priyanka Gandhi Negotiates 125-Seat Deal with SP for UP Assembly Elections
Published: October 20, 2026
Priyanka Gandhi met with Uttar Pradesh Congress leaders on Monday to negotiate seat allocation for the upcoming assembly election, discussing about 175 seats. The alliance is expected to finalize a 125‑150 seat split with the Samajwadi Party by November.
The session saw Congress outline a list of roughly 100 Category A, 40‑50 Category B, and 25‑35 Category C seats, with 175 seats earmarked for discussion.
The party, after a solitary run in 2022 that yielded only two seats, is now targeting 125‑150 seats in alliance with the Samajwadi Party.
Samajwadi Chief Akhilesh Yadav has signalled willingness to hand over no more than 60‑65 seats, stressing ‘winnability’ as the selection criterion.
Congress UP in‑charge Rajendra Pal Gautam insists on no less than 150 seats, citing a reshuffled state unit led by MLA Aradhana Misra and MP Imran Masood to appease Muslim voters. A follow‑up meeting is slated for later this week, after which the alliance will present a finalized list to the SP by November.
