Jamia Millia Islamia has officially conceded to the demands of its protesting students, announcing a definitive timeline for the restoration of student union governance. The university issued an administrative order stating that the approval and implementation of the JMI Students’ Union Constitution will be finalized by May 15, 2027. This date marks the end of a nearly two-decade hiatus in student body representation at the New Delhi institution.
The immediate impact of this agreement is the revocation of all punitive measures taken during the unrest. The administration confirmed that all show-cause notices, disciplinary proceedings, rustications, suspensions, and campus ban orders linked to the protest will be withdrawn. Following a meeting with the Registrar, the students accepted this framework and agreed to call off their hunger strike.
The election mechanics are now set in stone. The fresh academic session will commence on July 16, 2027. Student union elections must be conducted within six weeks of this start date, placing the first vote in the last week of August 2027. Offline classes and examinations, which had been suspended in favor of online modes until November 8 due to the protests, will resume on Monday.
