C. Joseph Vijay, president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, May 10, 2026, following his party's victory in the State Assembly elections. The swearing-in ends nearly 60 years of alternating power between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, with Vijay elected from two constituencies, requiring him to vacate one seat in accordance with electoral rules. The party commands an effective strength of 107 legislators.
The government formation was supported by five Congress MLAs-elect and two each from the CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), all of whom contested under the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance but shifted allegiance post-election.
The Election Commission is expected to issue directions on the by-election for the vacated constituency within the week. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan in Chennai, administered by Governor R. V. Ravi.
