Wake Forest Runners Set Record, Raising $407,000 for Cancer Research Fund

It wasn’t just a race. It was a marathon of community spirit. On October 1, 2026, the campus in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, filled with 2,406 runners and walkers who collectively lapped the Quad 11,862 times. The effort banked nearly $407,000 for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund, shattering the previous year’s record of $348,719. That jump in revenue is significant, but the human element is what makes the event distinct.

The money goes directly to the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. This isn’t abstract philanthropy; it funds specific research and patient services. The fund honors Brian Piccolo, a former football player who died of testicular cancer at 26. His story, famously told in the film Brian’s Song, still anchors the mission today. Students started the fund in 1980, and this year’s haul pushes the event’s 23-year total past $2.1 million.

Participation has climbed steadily. In 2021, the event raised about $202,788. By 2024, that figure crossed $304,500. Now, with over 2,400 participants, the scale has grown into one of the university’s largest recurring community fundraisers. It’s less about competitive speed and more about sustained, collective movement. Teams take turns running or walking laps around Hearn Plaza, keeping the energy high for the full day.

For readers interested in health advocacy, this model offers a clear template. Combining low-intensity exercise with a tangible cause creates a powerful engagement loop. You don’t need to be an elite athlete to contribute. You just need to show up. If your local university or hospital has a similar initiative, consider joining a team. The physical benefits of walking or running are well-documented, but the social and financial impact on patient care is just as measurable.

Always verify current fundraising totals on official university or hospital websites, as figures can be preliminary during the finalization period. But the trend is clear: community-driven wellness events are a robust way to support medical research while staying active.
