The Assam Police, acting on intelligence from Central Agencies, detained two men in Guwahati on Thursday, Oct 4, for allegedly passing army movement details to a Pakistani operative. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the arrests during a live X session, saying the men were in contact with foreign agents and had tried to honey‑trap insiders for sensitive data.
Separately, the Special Task Force arrested Abhishek Kumar Singh, a 31‑year‑old from Bihar, during a night operation on Oct 3‑4. Singh, staying in rented accommodation in Guwahati, was identified through a tip from Military Intelligence of the Gajraj Corps. Police recovered a mobile phone and SIM cards that authorities claim contained incriminating evidence of espionage.
In the same day, the Assam Cabinet sanctioned the preparation of a Detailed Project Report for Phase II of the Guwahati Brahmaputra Riverfront Development, assigning Tata Consulting Engineers to lead the work. The cabinet also approved a memorandum of understanding with the Bodoland Territorial Region, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong for rural water supply under the Jal Jeevan Mission, and gave a Rs 10,200‑crore incentive to Dalmia Bharat Green Vision for a new clinker plant.
All the new measures aim to tighten security and boost development. The arrested men will now be handed over to the Intelligence Bureau for a full probe, while the cabinet’s decisions are expected to be implemented over the next fiscal year. The state media will monitor the progress of both the security operations and the infrastructure projects.
