Thomas Mikaelson, 19, stood in the dock at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday, September 30, and formally admitted to a charge that sounds like a tabloid headline but carries the weight of UK sexual offences law. He pleaded guilty to attempting to allow sexual penetration by a living animal. The incident occurred in August 2025 at Gledhill Farm in Almondbury, on the outskirts of Huddersfield, and involved a Shetland pony named Cheeky.
The courtroom was tense but brief. Mikaelson did not admit to a secondary charge of recklessly trespassing to commit a sexual offence. He also denied a separate count of trespass at the same farm dating back to June 2025. Judge Simon Phillips KC, presiding over the case, noted that the crime had severely disrupted the farm’s operations. “It clearly has had an impact in more than one respect upon the farm and those involved in its operation,” Phillips said. He added that the farmer, who submitted a victim impact statement, should have the chance to attend the sentencing hearing.
Phillips did not mince words regarding the potential punishment. He told Mikaelson directly that a “custodial sentence is an option.” The judge granted bail, and the teenager left the court wearing a hat and a scarf wrapped tightly around his face. He will return on November 17 to hear his final verdict.
This case follows a disturbing trend in animal-related sexual offences across the Atlantic. Last month, Malia Elizabeth Nummerdor, 38, was arrested in Florida after home surveillance footage showed her engaging in sexual activity with the family dog. Numberdor, now facing a felony charge of Sexual Activity Involving Animals, confirmed the animal was her pet. The juxtaposition of these two cases highlights a growing legal and social crisis regarding bestiality charges in both the UK and the US.
