The 44‑year‑old former England pace ace has signed on to lead a new venture in Naples, after Lancashire chose not to renew his contract after 25 years.
Anderson’s résumé is a cricketing résumé: 400+ first‑class and limited‑overs matches, nearly 1,000 wickets, and a place among England’s most successful bowlers. His departure from Lancashire left a void that the Naples Knights are hoping to fill.
The Knights will compete in a 12‑day, 10‑over tournament that starts on Nov 18 at the Roma Cricket Ground. The competition, created by former professionals Nadeem Shahid and Aamir Akhtar, will also feature stars like Chris Gayle, Shaun Marsh and Dawid Malan.
Aamir Akhtar says the event is a big draw because Italy’s growing interest in cricket and its Olympic inclusion have made the country an attractive destination. The tournament will offer free entry, coaching clinics and a platform for Italian players to aim for the 2032 Brisbane Games.
Anderson’s company, Activate Sport & Leisure, will run some of the clinics, and the fast bowler stressed that his team’s aim is two‑fold: win the title and help grow the game beyond the tournament.
The Knights’ first match will pit Anderson’s experience against the flamboyant Gayle, while the tournament’s schedule promises plenty of high‑powered overs to keep the fans on edge.
Next up: the opening day on Nov 18, where Anderson’s leadership will be tested against international talent and the rising Italian crowd.
