AIADMK Splits Amid Support for Vijay's TVK as Post-Election Alliance Talks Intensify
At least 30 of the AIADMK's 47 MLAs are supporting Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor Thalapathy Vijay, according to multiple sources, triggering internal turmoil within the party and prompting the cancellation of a scheduled MLA meeting on Wednesday. The dissent underscores growing dissatisfaction with AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami, who has not endorsed the TVK, amid criticism of the party's performance since 2019.
Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Wednesday to stake claim to form the government, following support from five Congress MLAs, though Congress has demanded two cabinet positions and key administrative roles in return. TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member assembly but must cede one seat after Vijay's dual constituency victory, leaving the party six seats short of the 118 needed for a majority.
The DMK, which won 59 seats, is reportedly in talks with AIADMK about a potential alliance, with both parties said to have informed the Governor they can secure majority support, though DMK leader A Saravanan publicly rejected the possibility. TVK is now in discussions with smaller parties, including the VCK, to reach the majority threshold.
The Governor has not yet announced a decision on which party or coalition will be invited to form the government, as political negotiations continue. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
