The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) issued a show-cause notice to Olympic wrestler Vinesh Phogat on May 9, 2026, declaring her ineligible to compete in domestic events until June 26, 2026, for failing to complete the mandatory six-month notice period required under UWW Anti-Doping Rules after returning from retirement. The WFI cited violations of anti-doping regulations, indiscipline, and damage to the image of Indian wrestling as grounds for the action.
The 15-page notice accuses Phogat of four major charges: disqualification from the 2024 Paris Olympics for missing weight, whereabouts failures under anti-doping rules, competing in two weight categories during the March 2024 selection trials, and breaching federation norms. WFI stated her actions caused national embarrassment and violated the WFI Constitution and UWW International Wrestling Rules.
Phogat is barred from participating in the National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda, scheduled from May 10 to 12, which was set to mark her competitive return. The notice requires her to explain the allegations within 14 days, stating the federation must verify she has not committed any anti-doping violation that would disqualify her from future events.
The WFI will review her response before deciding on further disciplinary measures. A final decision is expected by late June.
