The decisive throw came on his sixth and final attempt, a last‑ditch surge that left Yashvir Singh trailing at 85.72m.
Pathirage kept his cool in the rain‑slick arena, saying, ‘I couldn’t get the grip I wanted, but I’m proud to be Sri Lanka’s first Asian javelin champion.’
Neeraj Chopra, the Indian two‑time Olympic medallist, was ruled out after an ankle ligament tear, a loss that Pathirage described as ‘bad luck’ for the hosts.
This marks his third gold in a season that has seen him claim 13 of 14 titles, including the Commonwealth Games and Diamond League finals, with three throws beyond 90m.
Looking ahead, Pathirage is eyeing the World Championships next year and the 2028 LA Olympics, while India will lean on Yashvir and Rohit for future continental battles.
