Narges Mohammadi, Iran's imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner, has been transferred to Tehran Pars Hospital for treatment by her own medical team, according to a statement by the Narges Mohammadi Foundation. Mohammadi, 54, was granted a suspension of her sentence on heavy bail after suffering a heart attack two weeks ago.
Mohammadi was sentenced to 7-1/2 years in prison for her campaign to advance women's rights and abolish the death penalty, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while in prison.
The foundation said Mohammadi requires permanent, specialized care and should never return to prison.
The Iranian government's decision to grant bail and suspend Mohammadi's sentence comes amid ongoing unrest in the country, with rights groups reporting executions of people involved in mass protests triggered by economic unease. The court or relevant authorities are expected to provide further updates on Mohammadi's case in the coming days.
