Shares of ICICI Life Insurance slid 1.4% to ₹453.3 after the insurer disclosed a VNB of ₹712 crore in Q2 FY27, a 20.7% YoY jump but ₹10 crore shy of the ₹722 crore consensus.
The VNB margin widened to 25.43% from 24% a year earlier, yet it missed the 25.79% estimate. Retail APE rose 10.7% to ₹2,221 crore, slightly ahead of the ₹2,211 crore poll.
HSBC, Nomura and JPMorgan keep a Buy rating, citing a 1× embedded‑value valuation and potential upside of 30–60% from the Tuesday close. HSBC’s target is ₹582, Nomura’s ₹710, and JPMorgan’s ₹670. All three note margin pressure from the protection business.
Margin moderation ties to a 790‑basis‑point drop in the protection mix, which fell to 20% of business from 27% a quarter earlier. The protection share remains 270 basis points above the year‑ago level.
ICICI Life has not yet issued near‑term guidance; the next earnings release is due on 22 November. A rebound would hinge on sustained retail APE growth and clearer regulatory signals.
The stock trades near its 52‑week low of ₹441.8, despite a 33% YTD decline, leaving room for a pullback on a 1× embedded‑value basis.
