AISA national president Neha Bora was released from the Narela Industrial Area police station in Delhi on Sunday after being detained during a march to Jantar Mantar.
Police said Bora was taken in a private vehicle without an official number plate, allegedly bypassing standard procedure, and that the team had no female officers inside the vehicle. A senior officer dismissed the claims, citing that protesters had attacked police and bitten them.
Bora was released without her phone and bag, and lawyers are being dispatched to the station to assist her.
The protest was the third consecutive day of AISA activists demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and was marked by heavy police barricades and a confrontation when protesters tried to cross the barricades.
Earlier this week, more than 150 protesters were detained on Saturday and over 1,000 were detained on Friday in central Delhi, including AAP leaders and activist Yogendra Yadav.
The agitation follows an investigation by The Indian Express exposing that Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had objected at least 14 times over the last decade to SIR decisions made without their input. The Delhi Police will hold a press conference tomorrow to clarify the incident, while AISA plans to file a petition in court.
