Australian tennis player Mal Anderson has died at the age of 91, Tennis Australia said Monday. He made history in 1957 by becoming the first unseeded player to win the US Open men's singles title, then known as the United States Championships, defeating three seeded opponents and losing only two sets during the tournament.
Born on a farm in Queensland, Anderson learned the game on a dirt court and went on to win three Grand Slam doubles titles and help Australia secure the Davis Cup twice. He retired from professional tennis in the 1960s but remained active in the sport, mentoring young Australian players.
Former world number one Pat Rafter paid tribute, calling Anderson a 'true legend of the game' and a 'terrific bloke' who was generous with his time and guidance. Rafter said Anderson helped shape his early career and represented a significant loss for Australian tennis.
Tennis Australia is expected to issue a formal statement honoring Anderson’s contributions, and a memorial event may be organized in the coming weeks.
