GBA Elections in Bengaluru to be Held Between June 14 and 24
The State Election Commissioner, G.S. Sangreshi, said on Friday that elections to the five corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) are expected to be held between June 14 and 24, as directed by the Supreme Court. The Commission has completed all preparatory steps and is equipped to conduct the elections, with the State government asked to suggest feasible dates within the given window.
The GBA officials had cited practical difficulties, including the monsoon and limited staff availability, while requesting additional time. However, Mr. Sangreshi clarified that the meeting was called solely to work out the election timeline and not to deliberate on extending the deadline.
The Supreme Court's directions leave no room for deferment, and the State Election Commission does not have the authority to alter the schedule. A final indulgence has already been granted, and a compliance report must be placed before the Supreme Court by June 30.
The Commission will go ahead and announce the final schedule within a week after considering the inputs received. The court's directive and the Commission's preparations ensure that the elections will be held as scheduled, with the next step being the announcement of the final election dates.
