Canada's intelligence agency has labeled Khalistani extremists a 'national security threat', according to a new report, validating India's long-standing argument that these groups pose a security concern. The report by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) states that Khalistani extremists use Canadian institutions to promote their violent extremist agenda and collect funds from unsuspecting community members.
The issue of Khalistan has been a point of contention between India and Canada, particularly after the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023, which led to a diplomatic standoff between the two countries.
The CSIS report highlights that the involvement of Canada-based Khalistani extremists in violent activities 'continues to pose a national security threat to Canada and to Canadian interests'.
The report comes a year after the 40th anniversary of the bombing of Air India Flight 182, whose suspects were members of Khalistani extremist groups.
The Indian government has welcomed the report, with the Minister of External Affairs spokesperson saying that India has repeatedly urged the Canadian government to take effective action against anti-India elements operating from its soil. The spokesperson added that this includes addressing the issue of glorification of violence and threats against Indian leaders and diplomats.
The Canadian government is expected to take further action against Khalistani extremists, with the report marking a significant shift in Canada's approach to the issue. The court will resume hearing on related cases, and the Indian government will continue to press for action against anti-India elements operating from Canada.
