The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has installed a pilot green shade structure named 'Haritha Ashrayam' at the RTC Complex junction to protect commuters from intense summer heat. The structure covers a busy traffic stretch, offering shelter to motorists, pedestrians, and those waiting at traffic signals during peak afternoon hours.
Designed by the GVMC engineering wing, the shade incorporates wind-resistant features to endure strong gusts and sudden rains common in the city. Water sprinklers have been installed beneath the structure to create a cooling effect, enhancing comfort for people passing through the junction.
Chief Engineer Satyanarayana Raju stated that the structure's performance is under close monitoring. If successful, the model will be presented to the GVMC chief for approval to replicate at other major junctions across the city this summer.
A similar structure was previously implemented at Assilmetta. The current initiative has drawn positive public response, with commuters acknowledging the civic body's efforts to improve urban comfort during high temperatures.
The GVMC will review the pilot's effectiveness in the coming weeks before deciding on citywide expansion.
