Maharashtra recorded the highest number of crimes against children, with 24,171 cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 22,222 cases, according to the National Crime Records Bureau's 'Crime in India 2024' report. The state also reported 47,954 cases of crimes against women, with Mumbai registering 6,358 cases, second only to Delhi.
The NCRB report stated that the increase in police data does not necessarily indicate an increase in crime, but rather a reflection of improved reporting. Maharashtra saw an increase in cybercrime, with 9,922 cases recorded in 2024, up from 8,103 in 2023.
Mumbai alone registered 4,939 cybercrime cases, while Bangalore topped the list with 17,561 cases. The state also recorded 403 cases of cyber stalking and 2,827 cases of cyber fraud.
The Anti Corruption Bureau recorded 721 cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act in 2024, a decrease from 812 in the previous year. The state stood third in economic offences, with 20,083 cases, behind Telangana and Rajasthan.
The Maharashtra government is expected to review the NCRB report and take necessary measures to address the high incidence of crimes against children and women in the state. The police department will also focus on improving investigation and prosecution of these cases.
