The incident unfolded around 6:30 pm on Monday when residents brought a six‑year‑old girl and her family to the Shidipura police post, alleging a man had assaulted her.
Ankit, a 34‑year‑old from Bagraoji Basti, was immediately handed over to the officers on duty, who took him into custody.
The Shidipura post officer said the case would be registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and evidence would be collected from the scene.
The victim was taken for a medical examination, and her statements, along with those of witnesses, will be recorded in accordance with the law.
Residents in the Kishanganj area expressed relief that the community had acted swiftly, saying they would keep an eye on local children and report any suspicious activity. The senior superintendent of police will review the evidence and decide on prosecution.
