The Congress party has initiated an internal review following its defeat in the Assam Assembly elections, with Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi taking full responsibility for the outcome. Gogoi announced the review during a party workers' meeting in Guwahati on Saturday, stating he had communicated the party's position to the central leadership.
He said the Congress would make informed decisions on organisational restructuring and future strategy after gathering feedback from former MLAs, contesting candidates, and newly elected representatives. The second phase of the review is now underway, involving consultations with district-level leaders and senior members, aimed at identifying key reasons for the party's performance ahead of the 2026 elections.
Gogoi rejected claims by politician Badruddin Ajmal that the Congress had become like the Muslim League, reaffirming the party's commitment to constitutional values and inclusive politics. He alleged that parties such as the All India United Democratic Front and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen indirectly benefited the BJP by splitting opposition votes in Assam.
He also criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's remarks on opposition leaders joining the BJP, saying Congress would focus on strengthening its organisation and reconnecting with the public. Gogoi raised concerns over artificial flooding in Guwahati, governance issues, and lack of transparency in coal-related operations, calling for better infrastructure and accountability.
The party will continue consultations over the next month and finalise a course of action to rebuild its presence in Assam, Gogoi said, adding that Congress remains committed to introspection and public service.
