The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has issued the first WLTP compliance certificate under AIS:175 to Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd., certifying the Lexus LM 350h and its variants as compliant with the new global testing standard. The certificate was presented by ARAI Director Dr. Reji Mathai to Toyota Kirloskar Motor General Manager Abhay Kulkarni during a formal ceremony attended by senior ARAI officials in Pune.
Toyota achieved the certification nearly a year ahead of the April 1, 2027, statutory deadline set by the Indian government for mandatory WLTP testing for M1 and M2 category vehicles with a maximum laden mass up to 3,500 kg. The WLTP standard, developed under UNECE guidelines, provides more accurate measurements of fuel consumption, energy use, and emissions by simulating real-world driving conditions, replacing outdated test cycles like the NEDC.
India's adoption of WLTP through AIS:175 aligns domestic vehicle testing with international norms, improving data consistency for regulators and consumers. ARAI, operating under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, said the milestone reflects growing industry preparedness, with manufacturers like Toyota proactively adapting to upcoming regulations. The Lexus LM 350h, a hybrid luxury MPV, is the first model certified under the framework.
ARAI noted that the certification sets a benchmark for other automakers as the April 2027 compliance deadline approaches. Industry-wide testing under AIS:175 will become mandatory from that date, and ARAI expects increased certification activity in the coming months as manufacturers prepare their vehicle lineups for approval.
