Nearly half of the Congress party's newly elected MLAs in Kerala are young, first-time legislators, with around 30 out of 60 winners under the age of 45. These candidates, many drawn from the Kerala Students Union and Youth Congress, defeated several incumbent ministers, including Health Minister Veena George and Animal Husbandry Minister J. Chinchurani, in the recent Assembly elections. The results mark a significant generational shift within the party's state legislature wing.
Among the victors are Youth Congress leader Abin Varkey, who defeated George; M.M. Naseer, who unseated Chinchurani; and Vidya Balakrishnan, who beat Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran. V.S. Joy defeated former Minister K.T. Jaleel, while Sudheer Sha Palode defeated D.K. Murali. O.J. Janeesh, the State Youth Congress president, won from Kodungalloor, and 30-year-old A.D. Thomas became the youngest MLA-elect from Alappuzha.
K. Babu, a six-time former MLA, attributed the success to organisational preparation, anti-LDF sentiment, and consolidation of minority and majority community votes. Benny Behanan, Congress MP, said the central leadership's push for youth and women's representation shaped the candidate selection. He noted the average age of new MLAs is around 45, a sharp drop from the previous leadership's 65-year average.
Party sources confirmed that the selection of the Chief Ministerial candidate remains pending, with contenders including AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala. The decision is expected to be announced after consultations with the central leadership.
The Kerala Congress legislature party will convene in the coming days to elect its leadership, following directions from the All India Congress Committee.
