The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) is facing an intense battle for its president post, with current president Sunny Joseph likely to relinquish the position to take up a role in the next United Democratic Front (UDF) government. According to party insiders, the frontrunners for the post include Lok Sabha MPs Benny Behanan, Kodikunnil Suresh, Anto Antony, and Shafi Parambil.
The AICC is considering factors such as age, social demographics, and political merit in making its decision. Meanwhile, the party's choice for Chief Minister remains uncertain, with V.D. Satheesan, K.C. Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala being considered.
The INTUC, the party's trade union, has waded into the dispute, with leader R. Chandrasekharan objecting to Mr Venugopal's candidature.
The party high command has begun consulting senior leaders, including former KPCC presidents, to make a decision on the Chief Minister post. The AICC is likely to seek the opinion of party veterans, including A.K. Antony and V.M. Sudheeran, before taking a final call.
