Himanta Biswa Sarma will take oath as Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on May 12, 2026, after being elected leader of the BJP-led NDA legislature party Sunday, following the alliance's decisive victory in the state assembly elections. The NDA won 102 of 126 seats, with the BJP securing 82, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) 10, and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) 10.
Sarma, who resigned as Chief Minister on May 6 along with his council of ministers, met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Sunday to formally stake claim to form the new government. He was unanimously elected leader of the BJP and NDA legislature party, with Union Minister JP Nadda confirming that eight BJP MLAs proposed his name.
Sarma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Nadda for their support, stating the election result reflects public endorsement of development and stability. He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing Assam's growth under the 'Viksit Assam' agenda.
The swearing-in ceremony, scheduled for May 12, will include the new Council of Ministers. The Governor will administer the oath during a ceremony at Lok Bhawan, with senior Union ministers and party leaders expected to attend.
