It looked like a scene ripped straight from a sci-fi movie, but the drums were very real. On September 28, humanoid robots clad in traditional Saudi thobes and ghutras took the stage at a diplomatic reception in Riyadh, executing the synchronized movements of the Alardah Alnajdiyah. The performance was part of a celebration for the 77th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, hosted by the Chinese Embassy.
The robots didn't just stand there; they moved in formation, raising and lowering ceremonial swords in time with the rhythm. They turned, bowed, and shifted side to side, mimicking the precise choreography of the traditional dance. More than 600 guests watched, including Riyadh Region Mayor Prince Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf and Chinese Ambassador Chang Hua.
For those unfamiliar, the Ardah is a deeply rooted Saudi cultural performance combining dance, drumming, and poetry. It’s a staple at weddings and national events, recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. By having machines perform this ancient ritual, the event created a striking contrast between old tradition and new technology.
Ambassador Chang Hua shared the footage online, describing the robots as a 'vivid illustration' of China’s technological progress. The internet, naturally, lost its mind over the image of robotic warriors in ghutras. Some saw it as a symbol of Sino-Saudi friendship; others just couldn't get over the absurdity of seeing humanoid robots swing swords. Either way, it was a moment no one will forget.
