Amarinder Singh Raja Warring handed in his resignation to Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Friday after a frank meeting about Punjab’s political climate and the looming state polls. He had led the party through the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, securing seven of the state’s 13 seats.
Warring said he left the post voluntarily, insisting he was not asked to step down. Factional friction has been brewing, with senior leaders like Charanjit Singh Channi and Partap Singh Bajwa pushing for a leadership change.
The Congress Working Committee had earlier signalled that Warring would stay on, but the arrangement left Channi and others dissatisfied. Vijay Inder Singla, a Hindu face close to Gandhi and former education minister, is now the frontrunner to replace him.
With the state elections set for early next year, the party’s leadership shuffle could influence its vote share and the balance of power in Punjab’s assembly.
