Paytm’s shares, traded on the NSE under PAYTM, slipped 0.3% after the government’s MDR notification, signalling cautious market sentiment. Pine Labs (PINELMS) mirrored the move, closing 0.5% lower on the same day.
The Ministry of Finance issued a circular last week outlining adjustments to merchant discount rates for payment service providers. While the letter does not specify new rate thresholds, industry insiders warn that the changes could push gross margins up by a few percentage points.
Analysts from XYZ Capital note that Paytm’s core payment business, which accounts for roughly 60% of its revenue, could see a margin lift as the MDR floor rises. Pine Labs, serving a broader merchant base, may experience a similar, albeit slightly smaller, benefit due to its diversified portfolio.
Comparatively, the payments sector’s average gross margin stood at 35% in Q4 FY24, slightly below the 37% reported by competitors such as Razorpay. The proposed MDR revisions could narrow this gap, aligning Paytm and Pine Labs closer to the sector benchmark.
Looking ahead, both companies have not released formal guidance on the impact of MDR changes. Paytm’s investor day next month and Pine Labs’ earnings call on June 10 will likely provide more clarity. Until then, traders will watch the policy’s rollout and any subsequent regulatory clarifications.
The broader market reaction has been muted, with the Nifty IT index holding steady at 18,200 points. Investors appear to be waiting for concrete data before taking significant positions.
