Prashant Bhushan Defies Govt: 'We Want Regime Change, What’s Wrong With That?'

Prashant Bhushan stripped away the diplomatic language usually reserved for political dissent. Speaking alongside Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke on Thursday, the senior Supreme Court advocate stated plainly that the movement's goal is regime change. He rejected the government's narrative that protesters are conspiring to topple the state, asking, “Yes, we want to change the regime; we all want this. What’s wrong with this?”

Bhushan weaponized the ruling party's own history against them. He pointed out that the BJP has historically campaigned on the platform of changing the government, implying that the current administration's crackdown is hypocritical. For the activist, this is not an act of sedition but a fundamental democratic right. He cited the Supreme Court’s 2022 verdict declaring the colonial-era sedition law unconstitutional, arguing that the right to oppose the state is inherent in Indian democracy.

The comments land in a volatile political landscape. The central government has recently intensified its legal and physical crackdown on dissent, citing national security and the prevention of protests. Bhushan's direct admission removes any ambiguity about the protesters' intent, likely providing the Home Ministry with a clear pretext for further detention or prosecution under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The legal team of the government will now likely review these statements to determine if they cross the threshold into inciting violence.

Dipke, seated beside Bhushan, amplified the message, framing the protest as a necessary corrective to what the group perceives as authoritarian overreach. The pair’s strategy is clear: by openly stating their intent, they aim to expose the government's selective enforcement of the law. The next 48 hours will be critical as police in Delhi and other states assess whether to act on these remarks, potentially leading to a new wave of arrests or a formal court notice to the senior advocate.
