Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma suspended four police officers in Silchar after an ambulance was halted for his convoy on September 30, 2026.
The incident unfolded when the CM’s convoy cut through a stretch of the National Highway, forcing the 108 ambulance to stop. Sarma, who tweeted his apology on X, said, “No Chief Minister’s passage should EVER take precedence over a life in need of urgent care.”
Police officers on duty in the area were held responsible for the lapse, and Sarma ordered a formal inquiry into the conduct of VIP convoys. He warned that any violations would face strict consequences.
Earlier this year, in January 2022, Sarma had publicly reprimanded Deputy Commissioner Nisarg Hivare of Nagaon for blocking traffic for a CM convoy, signalling his long‑standing concerns over such disruptions.
The patient, a local resident of Silchar, and his family were left waiting as the ambulance was halted, and the incident sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many demanding stricter enforcement of traffic protocols.
