Murali Sreeshankar is competing in the sixth leg of the Indian Athletics Series at Nehru Stadium in Kozhikode, which began Sunday and serves as a qualifying requirement for the National Federation Cup in Ranchi from May 22 to 25. The event is part of a 16-leg national circuit running from April to September and mandatory for athletes seeking selection to represent India at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Athletics Federation of India requires all athletes to participate in a minimum of two domestic meets this season to be eligible for the Federation Cup. Sreeshankar, 27, a silver medallist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, said his recent three-week training stint at the North West Academy of Sport in Potchefstroom, South Africa, helped him achieve a jump of 8.12 meters in a local meet.
He noted the cold weather conditions in South Africa were similar to those expected in Glasgow, potentially aiding his performance at the upcoming Games. Sreeshankar said he is targeting peak form for major events this season, including the Commonwealth and Asian Games. The Federation Cup trials in Ranchi will conclude on May 25, after which the national team for the Commonwealth Games is expected to be finalized.
