Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved a Rs 8 per litre hike in the price paid for milk, effective November 1, with Rs 7 earmarked for farmers and the remaining Rs 1 for cooperatives.
Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said the cabinet had debated the issue twice or thrice before reaching a unanimous decision, citing farmers’ street protests and cooperatives’ appeals.
Farmers currently receive Rs 35 per litre in addition to a Rs 5 government incentive. After the hike, the base payment will rise to Rs 42, while the incentive remains unchanged, bringing total earnings to Rs 47 per litre.
Earlier, farmers had demanded a Rs 10 per litre increase, but the cabinet opted for Rs 8, arguing that a larger jump was unsustainable.
The move is set to benefit lakhs of farming families across Karnataka, with the price adjustment to take effect on November 1 and a review scheduled for early 2027.
