Punam Raut has hung up her international gloves, declaring her retirement from all formats of the game with immediate effect. The 37‑year‑old took to Instagram to share the news, saying she’d spent years weighing her future before making the call.
Raut’s career spanned 2009 to 2021, during which she played 4 Tests, 73 ODIs and 35 T20Is. She finished on 2,299 runs in ODIs, 719 in T20Is and 264 in Tests, with four centuries to her name – three in ODIs, one in a Test against South Africa in 2014 – and 15 ODI fifties.
Her most iconic stint came during the 2017 Women’s World Cup. Raut topped the Indian batting charts with 381 runs, including a gritty 86 against England in the final at Lord’s, a match India lost by just nine runs. Earlier in the tournament she also hit 109 against Ireland, sharing a record 320‑run opening stand with Deepti Sharma.
Raut’s final international outing was an ODI versus England in June 2021, but she remains a legend from the historic pink‑ball Test against Australia in 2021, where she scored 36 and walked off after a contested not‑out.
In her farewell message she thanked the Mumbai Cricket Association for the support that shaped her journey. Her departure will feel keenly in the Indian lineup, and the side will now look to nurture fresh talent ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
