Google has settled a class-action lawsuit filed by Black employees alleging systemic racial discrimination in hiring, pay, and career advancement for $50 million, with final court approval granted this week. The lawsuit, originally filed in 2022 by former employee April Curley and later joined by others, accused the tech giant of maintaining a pattern of steering Black workers into lower-level roles and fostering a hostile work environment.
Plaintiffs alleged that Google hiring managers used subjective criteria, including whether candidates were 'Googly' enough, as a proxy for racial bias, and that interviewers routinely undermined Black applicants. The suit also claimed Black employees faced retaliation for raising concerns and were denied equal pay and promotion opportunities. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the plaintiffs, stated the settlement includes commitments to pay equity analyses, greater pay transparency, and restrictions on mandatory arbitration through August 2026.
Google denied the allegations when the settlement was announced in May 2025, reiterating its commitment to fair hiring and leveling practices. The company emphasized it does not admit fault or liability under the terms of the agreement. The case reflects broader, long-standing concerns raised by Black employees, including the 2020 departure of AI researcher Timnit Gebru, who alleged racial and gender bias.
The settlement applies to Black employees who worked at Google between January 1, 2015, and August 31, 2026. Claims administrators will begin processing payouts following the court's final approval. The company will continue internal reviews of its employment practices as required under the agreement.
