External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said cricket provides a 'special dimension' to India's relationship with Trinidad and Tobago, during a flag-raising ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs in Port of Spain on Friday, May 8, 2026. He described the shared history, anti-colonial struggle, and deep cultural affinities as foundational to bilateral ties, but emphasized cricket as a unique connector between the two nations.
Jaishankar noted the enduring popularity of West Indian cricketers in India, specifically naming Brian Lara, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, and Nicholas Pooran. Lara attended the ceremony, and Jaishankar referenced his legacy, saying Indian fans have long admired Caribbean cricket stars. The minister also highlighted cultural parallels in food, festivals like Diwali and Phagwa, and the widespread appeal of Indian music, film, and television in Trinidad and Tobago.
During the visit, Jaishankar met Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional matters. He participated in an event distributing Made-in-India laptops to schoolchildren, fulfilling a commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The trip also included visits to Trinidad and Tobago’s Parliament, where he met Senate President Wade Mark and Speaker Jagdeo Singh, and concluded agreements on tourism, solar energy upgrades, Quick Impact Projects, and an Ayurveda Chair.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the agreements would move to implementation phases in the coming months. Jaishankar concluded his Caribbean tour in Port of Spain after stops in Jamaica and Suriname, with follow-up reviews expected between technical teams later this quarter.
