The 61st Venice Biennale has begun, with India presenting a diverse range of artistic voices. The India Pavilion, curated by Amin Jaffer, features the exhibition 'Geographies of Distance: Remembering Home', which explores the themes of home, memory, and belonging through the works of five Indian artists: Alwar Balasubramaniam, Ranjani Shettar, Sumakshi Singh, Skarma Sonam Tashi, and Asim Waqif.

The exhibition is supported by the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Ministry of Culture, with additional support from Isha Ambani and Sunil Munjal. The curator, Amin Jaffer, notes that each of the five artists evokes the concept of home through their use of traditional Indian materials and techniques.

In addition to the India Pavilion, other collateral exhibitions are also showcasing Indian art, including Nalini Malani's 'Of Woman Born', presented by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, and Paresh Maity's sculpture 'Equilibrium', exhibited at Marinaressa Gardens.

The Biennale will run from May 9, with previews from May 6-8. The immediate next steps include the announcement of the curator for the seventh edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, to be made by its president, Jitish Kallat, on May 8.
