In a press release issued in New Delhi, the International Monetary Fund lifted India’s growth projection for the current fiscal year to 7%, up from 6.4%, marking it as the fastest‑growing major economy worldwide.
The upgrade follows similar moves by the World Bank, ADB, S&P and Moody’s after official data estimated first‑quarter growth at 7.8%; meanwhile, global growth is projected at 3.4% for 2026, a figure that remains resilient amid recent shocks.
The IMF also flagged inflation at 5% for this year and projected per‑capita output to rise 4.7% in 2026, down from 5.2% the previous year, citing strong domestic demand and robust services activity. The report highlighted India’s trade diversification, noting recent free‑trade agreements with the UK and the EU that slash tariffs and lower barriers for services trade.
Market analysts anticipate a surge in foreign‑direct investment following the upgrade, while the Reserve Bank of India may keep rates steady to support the expanded growth outlook. The government could also use the revised forecast to strengthen its fiscal reform agenda in the forthcoming budget session.
