The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, held on April 23, saw 3,352 out of 4,032 candidates forfeit their deposit as they failed to secure one-sixth of the total votes in their respective constituencies. The constituency of Karur had the highest number of candidates losing their deposit, with 76 out of 79 candidates failing to meet the required vote threshold.
The major political parties also suffered losses, with AIADMK candidates losing their deposit in 19 constituencies and BJP candidates losing their deposits in 5 constituencies. The NTK lost its deposit in all 234 constituencies, while the Congress, CPI, CPI (M), DMDK, DMK, and VCK did not lose deposit in any of the constituencies they contested in.
The Election Commission of India reported a polling percentage of 86.03% statewide, with 65,047 postal votes rejected out of a total of 586,954 received. The TVK candidates secured 172,262,209 votes across 233 constituencies, while the DMK and AIADMK received 119,291,144 and 104,621,146 votes respectively.
In terms of gender distribution, 13 of the 108 winning TVK candidates were women, while 6 of the 47 winning AIADMK candidates were women. The only winning DMDK candidate, one of the two winning CPI(M) candidates, and one of the five winning Congress candidates were also women.
The Election Commission will continue to finalize the results, with further announcements expected in the coming days. The winning candidates are expected to take office shortly, with the newly formed government set to begin its term.
