The National Human Rights Commission filed a case against Mumbai police over alleged child participation in a Cockroach Janta Party protest at Shivaji Park this week, demanding action reports within a week.
In a series of notices, the commission directed the Mumbai Police Commissioner, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, X Corp, and the Maharashtra Women and Child Development Department to submit reports on actions taken within seven days.
The NHRC instructed the police to examine how minors were brought to the demonstration, their roles, and whether they were deliberately positioned to thwart police intervention, a claim that, if proven, could constitute a cognisable offence.
Digital evidence, including photographs, videos, and social media posts depicting children during the protest, is to be preserved; X Corp has been asked to retain records of any posts that circulated online.
The Women and Child Development Department is to assess if the children require protection or assistance, ensuring their rights are upheld under the Juvenile Justice Act.
The NHRC expects the compiled reports by the end of next week, after which it will review findings and determine further action.
