The 18th BRICS Summit, held at a five‑star hotel in Delhi on 12‑13 September, saw constable Deepak Bangar, assigned to the Foreigners Cell of Northwest Delhi, post two Instagram reels in which he brandishes a light machine gun and a pistol while perched on a rooftop overlooking the city.
Delhi Police released a statement saying the constable had been suspended immediately after the reels went viral and that a departmental inquiry would investigate the breach of protocol. Police spokesperson said the incident "violates the code of conduct for officers on duty during high‑profile events".
The summit drew 32 delegations, including 11 from BRICS members, 10 partners and several international bodies, marking India’s fourth chairmanship of the bloc. Security teams were deployed across two hotels to safeguard delegates, a task that demanded strict adherence to protocol.
On the ground, a hotel staff member who worked the night shift recalled seeing the constable’s videos posted from the rooftop, noting the crowd’s shock as the gun footage aired on social media. The incident has sparked concern among hotel employees who fear increased scrutiny of staff conduct during major events.
The inquiry will conclude by the end of next month, after which Delhi Police will issue recommendations to tighten security procedures for future international gatherings.
