Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has resigned from the Tiruchirappalli East Assembly constituency, having won two seats in the April 23 state elections, according to the Tamil Nadu government. He will continue to represent the Perambur constituency.
Indian electoral rules prohibit holding more than one legislative seat simultaneously, requiring a candidate elected from two constituencies to vacate one within a specified period. Vijay's resignation from Tiruchirappalli East fulfills this requirement.
The Election Commission is expected to notify a by-election for the vacant Tiruchirappalli East seat in due course. The state government has submitted the resignation to the appropriate authorities for formal processing.
