On Sunday, Delhi Police arrested more than 200 demonstrators—primarily students from SFI, AISA and KYS—at Connaught Place, RK Ashram Marg and Vijay Chowk as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) pressed for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Supreme Court, after hearing urgent petitions on Saturday, directed authorities to ensure no illegal detentions and to allow peaceful protests, a mandate that clashes with the police’s heavy‑handed approach. Meanwhile, protests spread to Mumbai and Pune, where police detained smaller groups of demonstrators, and the CJP’s social media urged supporters to stay back for a new call.
Three CJP leaders—Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das—were released on Sunday after being produced before an executive magistrate, following their preventive arrest from inside an aircraft on Saturday. Ratna Singh, the party’s legal affairs head, said their release was conditional on not breaching peace for a year, calling the move a "major legal victory" and noting Dipke was returning to his village after his grandmother’s death.
YouTuber Dhruv Rathee alleged that plain‑clothes officers abducted him from his Gurugram home on Saturday morning and held him for 22–23 hours without access to a lawyer or phone, sustaining injuries during the operation. A police source said Rathee was released late Saturday night and could face further action if he attempted to visit Jantar Mantar despite prohibitory orders.
Other detainees included AISA president Neha Bora, seized near Vijay Chowk, and CPI(M) leader John Brittas, who suffered a chest injury after officers allegedly lifted him during the protest; Brittas has written to President Droupadi Murmu, the Rajya Sabha chairman and the chief justice of India demanding an independent inquiry. Journalists from The Hindu, Hindustan Times, The Indian Express and others were also detained, with senior reporter Sreenivasan Jain reporting that more than seven reporters were dragged into detention vans. Rahul Gandhi announced that opposition parties will march to the Supreme Court on Monday, submitting a memorandum on alleged "vote chori", setting the stage for a political showdown.
