NCRB Reports 6% Drop in Cognizable Crimes in 2024, Cybercrime Cases Surge

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released its 'Crime in India 2024' report on May 6, 2026, recording 58.86 lakh cognizable offenses nationwide—a 6% decrease from 2023. The data covers crimes under the Indian Penal Code and Special and Local Laws, indicating an overall decline in reported incidents.
Cybercrime cases, however, rose sharply, with 101,928 reported cases in 2024 compared to 86,420 the previous year. The bureau attributed the increase to greater digital penetration and improved reporting mechanisms across state police forces.
The NCRB also released the 'Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India (ADSI) 2024' report, which recorded 170,746 suicides in 2024. Drug overdose-related deaths increased by 50% compared to 2023, raising concerns among public health officials.
Officials stated that the data will be shared with state governments and relevant ministries for review. The Ministry of Home Affairs will assess trends and coordinate responses, with a focus on cybercrime prevention and mental health outreach, including the national tele-mental health service TELE Manas (14416).
