The Supreme Court of India, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, has announced a series of reforms to expedite bail hearings and improve the efficiency of the country's court system. The new directions require bail matters to be listed weekly or fortnightly, with fresh applications to be listed within a week of filing.
The court has also mandated the filing of status reports before the first hearing of a bail plea and made it compulsory to serve a copy of every bail application on the Advocate General.
In a separate initiative, the 'One Case, One Data' system will integrate case records and judicial data from all levels of courts in India, enabling seamless connectivity and improving judicial coordination.
The Supreme Court's reforms are expected to reduce delays and enhance access to justice, with High Courts across the country asked to fix an outer timeline for the speedy disposal of bail matters. The court will continue to monitor the implementation of these reforms, with the 'One Case, One Data' system set to be rolled out in phases.
