Opposition leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee met President Droupadi Murmu on Friday, presenting a memorandum that calls for the scrubbing of all Electronic Voting Machines in light of alleged vote theft.
The memorandum accuses Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of a grave error and alleges that the CEC, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah conspired to undermine democracy. Kharge said the opposition has compiled evidence and will submit it for scrutiny.
President Murmu responded by asking for concrete proof before taking any action. She said the evidence would be reviewed and that an investigation would be launched if warranted.
Rahul Gandhi described the meeting as "unbelievable," noting that the opposition had highlighted the alleged conspiracy and demanded proof. He said the president had accepted their statements without dispute.
Mamata Banerjee echoed the call for evidence, saying she would send the required documentation and urged the president to investigate thoroughly. She warned that India’s democratic fabric would suffer without proper safeguards.
The opposition’s four‑day agitation has intensified scrutiny of the voting process, and the decision to shift to paper ballots could postpone the upcoming elections. The next step will be the submission of the evidence and the president’s investigation report.
