Guwahati Police detained national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka and four central CJP leaders, including Ankit Bhardwaj, Akash Prem, Varun Agrawal and Anam, on Saturday before the party's regional volunteer meeting in Assam. The arrests cut short the CJP's first outreach gathering in the state.
The party had scheduled a day of meetings with local volunteers, visits to schools, and discussions with families about the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Ranka had promised to showcase the CJP’s growing support across the Northeast and to rally volunteers for upcoming elections.
In a press briefing earlier that day, Ranka criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing the government of manipulating election boundaries and of violent suppression of dissent. He said, "We know how you sealed the boundaries of the Assembly constituencies during the election. People from one village went and voted in three different Assembly constituencies, only because you wanted to win the election through electoral manipulation."
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke slammed the detentions, demanding a formal statement from the Guwahati Police and accusing the authorities of political intimidation. Dipke noted that the police offered no explanation for the arrests and that the party’s central team was taken into custody before they could even convene.
The CJP has filed a formal complaint with the Assam High Court and is requesting a judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the detentions. Officials in Guwahati have yet to clarify the reasons for the arrests or the number of individuals taken into custody.
