The National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange announced a full trading holiday for Friday, Oct 2 2026, to observe Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, with equity derivatives also halted during the regular session. The Multi Commodity Exchange will remain closed for the same day, shutting both morning and evening sessions.
The closure follows a weak market session on Thursday, when the Sensex and Nifty extended a losing streak to four consecutive days. The Sensex slipped 0.79% to 71,909.70, while the Nifty fell 0.88% to 22,421.95, amid foreign fund outflows, higher bond yields, and a spike in crude prices.
Among the laggards on the Sensex were Maruti, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Steel, Adani Ports, ITC, Power Grid, Hindustan Unilever, and Eternal, whereas Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, HCL Technologies, and HDFC Bank posted gains.
The 2026 market calendar lists several other national observances after Gandhi Jayanti: Dussehra on 20 Oct, Diwali-Balipratipada on 10 Nov, and Christmas on 25 Dec, all of which will also result in market closures.
Investors will be unable to execute trades until the markets reopen on Monday, Oct 5 2026, marking the end of the three‑day pause.
