C. Joseph Vijay, president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, will take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 3:15 p.m. at Nehru Stadium in Chennai. Vijay met with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai to stake claim to form a government, ending the political uncertainty in the state.
Vijay has the support of 120 MLAs-elect in the 234-member House, including the backing of the VCK and IUML, which extended unconditional support to TVK. The VCK and IUML, which have two MLAs-elect each, contested as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance.
The TVK, which won 108 seats, had already secured the support of five Congress MLAs-elect and two each from the CPI and the CPI(M). With the backing of the VCK and IUML, the TVK now has the support of 120 MLAs-elect, two more than the majority mark of 118.
The Governor will administer the oath of office to Vijay on Sunday, marking the beginning of the new government in Tamil Nadu. The newly formed government is expected to hold its first cabinet meeting soon after the oath-taking ceremony.
